Hi Everyone,
My name is Ethan Garner, I am a junior majoring in Chemical
Engineering, and I am specializing in Biomedical Engineering. Some of the classes I am taking this semester
are thermodynamics and numerical methods.
I am a part of Paradigm (BCM) and AIChE (American Institution of Chemical
Engineers). Within AIChE, I am a part of
the Chem-E-Car team. In Chem-E-Car, We design
and test a miniature car that runs and stops using only chemical
processes. My clubs in addition to my
major keep me busy. After my
undergraduate studies, I hope to get an MBA and a Masters in Bioengineering. After that, I hope to move to Japan and get a
job working as a chemical engineer at a pharmaceutical or medical company. The
reason for that I chose Japan is because it is one of the main producers of chemicals. I am from Clinton, Oklahoma and have always
been a Sooner so the lyrics to “Boomer Sooner” ring true for me. I am an avid reader and some of my favorite
books are The Count of Monte Cristo by
Alexandre Dumas, Les Misérables
by Victor Hugo, and Shogun by James
Clavell. One of my favorite authors is
Michael Crichton, who if you were unaware wrote Jurassic Park. I love anime, manga, and light novels. My favorite anime include Clannad, Angel Beats!, Steins;Gate, and Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi
wa Mada Shiranai (The Flower We Saw That Day). I highly recommend
that anyone in the least bit interested watch these titles. I also love video games and my favorite series
is the Mass Effect series. My favorite
entry in the series is the original game in the series Mass Effect 1. One of my favorite things to go do is scuba
diving. Swimming underwater and viewing
the marine life is very exhilarating.
One of my dreams is to cage diving and cave diving. I hope that this post has been helpful in you
getting to know me.

Hey Ethan! Sounds like you are a very busy guy. I had a roommate that was a mechanical engineer and I know that he was constantly working on school. I think that's awesome that you are wanting to move to Japan. I have never been to that part of the world, but I would definitely like to one day. I am also a big scuba diver. There is nothing like hanging out underwater for 45 minutes and just watching. I also would like to go cage and cave diving one day. It was nice getting to know a little bit about you!
ReplyDeleteHello Ethan! Chemical Engineering is a very impressive major! I have never been great at CHEM, so I am always intrigued by people who can make a career out of it! The clubs you are in sound very interesting. I would love to see how the Chem-E-Car actually works.
ReplyDeleteI am also a big fan of Michael Crichton and Jurassic Park!
I hope you have a good semester and good luck with your junior year!

Hi Ethan! I have a lot of friends who are engineering majors. I am a pre-med major and I really enjoy chemistry. I heard about paradigm this year through an even they hosted last week. I also have always been a sooner fan. I also loved the book The Counte of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I had to read it for an english class back in high school and that was the only book i really enjoyed reading. I wish you the best of luck this semester!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of Chem-E-Car before, Ethan: that sounds so cool! I will have to tell my husband about that one (he was a chemistry major, and then he went into meteorology).
ReplyDeleteAnd while the stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata are not part of the Japanese tradition, they are famous in other Asian countries, especially Indonesia and Thailand. In the Thai version of the Ramayana, the monkey-god Hanuman even gets to have a mermaid lover! So maybe that "underwater" connection will be something you want to explore. You'll be meeting Hanuman next week in the Ramayana, and his Thai mermaid lover is name Suvannamacha! More here:
Suvannamaccha
I hope you will enjoy the class!
I am ChemE/Biomedical Engineering as well! I am a senior so I took all of those classes last fall and it wasn't too fun (particularly thermo) but don't worry, senior year is much more laid back. Right now I'm taking tissue engineering with Sikavitsas, who I'm sure is teaching your thermodynamics class. Enjoy the rest of your major and best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteHi Ethan! I thought it was pretty cool you wanted to move to Japan to get a job! I really wish I could get back into the habit of reading for pleasure like you do. Scuba diving sounds like so much fun, but in all my 21 years of life, I have not yet learned how to swim- crazy, I know! You sound like you are already going to be very busy this semester! Kudos to you for being interested in both Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering- that sounds pretty tough and complex. I'm a Microbiology/Pre-med major but I have several friends that are Engineering majors as well. I've heard Thermo is a super hard class so I wish you all the best in that and all your other classes!
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan! You sound like you are extremely busy. Chemical engineering sounds extremely difficult. I have never been very good at chemistry and it took all of my efforts to get a good grade in it when I have had to take it. I also think that it is really cool that you already have a plan for what you want to do when you graduate, including your move to Japan. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan! Although I still consider myself new to the genre, I love anime too. I really enjoyed watching the series Space Dandy, Hellsing, Death Parade, Fate/Stay Night/Zero/UBW, and Kill la Kill. I definitely gravitate more towards the fantasy themed ones. It sounds like your course load this semester is intense! I can’t imagine the amount of work you have to do for your major, along with the extra-curricular activites. Best of luck and I’ll check out some of the series you recommended on your intro.
ReplyDeleteYou have good taste. Your favorite books are definitely on my list of favorites. There seem to be a lot of engineers in this class that show well-roundedness with their tastes in literature. Scuba diving sounds awesome. I have just been snorkeling once in Haiti, but I definitely want to try scuba diving. What are you wanting to do with Biomedical Engineering? I feel like that field has so many possibilities.
ReplyDeleteHi Ethan, it’s nice to meet you! I’m also in the college of engineering, but I’m studying Industrial and Systems Engineering. My sister did the biomedical/chemical engineering track and loved it! I know it’s pretty intense coursework, so props to you for hanging in there! You have some awesome passions, thanks for sharing them. I also love to read, but lately it just seems like I never have time to read for pleasure. Hopefully I’ll start carving some time out of my schedule to make it a priority this semester!
ReplyDeleteOooh biomedical engineering! That just sounds impressive all on it's own! I have several friends who aspire to be engineers and I know it's quite a difficult degree. So kudos to you. I really love books and well, and aquatic activities sound so fun, if only I could be a better swimmer and not just tread water! :D
ReplyDeleteHey, Ethan!
ReplyDeleteWhat a myriad of interests! I have seen first-hand how much hard work goes into Chemical Engineering and I really admire you for your dedication! I had no idea that that many chemicals had their origins in Japan -- that's fascinating! A good friend of mine lived just outside of Tokyo for a few years and absolutely loved it. Hopefully you'll love it just as much!
One of my favorite books (and movies) is the Count of Monte Cristo! Excellent combination of adventure and drama! :) I'm looking forward to reading and learning more about you!
Hi Ethan! Wow Japan how interesting! I have never thought about going to Japan so I am fascinated that you want to go there. I hope you get the chance to. I'm from Texas so the lyrics of Boomer Sooner don't ring as true for me as they do for you. I love the Jurassic Park books, I read through both of them this summer. True works of art. I really want to read more from the author!
ReplyDeleteEthan, I believe you're insane! Just kidding but I really admire that you are majoring in chemical engineering and specializing in biomedical engineering. Those aren't easy majors, and they require a lot of discipline. It's funny because I told myself that if I ever had to be an engineer, I would probably choose chemical or biomedical. Here you are doing both! You're going to go above and beyond, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey to Japan!
ReplyDeleteYou sound very busy! I have always really admired my engineer friends because I could never do it. So interesting you are wanting to move to Japan. I have never been, but my friend went this past summer to visit her Aunt that lives there and absolutely loved it. It's a different world over there! It will be such an incredible experience.
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan! I think it's awesome that you want to move to Japan!! I think I would like to move across seas at least once in my life too! I love all of your reading choices and I've heard great things about the anime that you chose too!I think it's great that you've got several different interests of the intellectual and physical kind! Great to meet you Ethan!
ReplyDeleteHI Ethan! I started as Bio medical engineer at University if Central Oklahoma but when i transferred her I ended Switching to biochemistry. I also like reading some mangas. You what you should watch One Punch Man. its a mix of satire and action and revolves around a parody about superheros. Good luck going to japan! I heard the food there is great.
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan! Your major and clubs definitely seem like they would keep you busy. It all sounds very interesting, though. I was originally a chemistry major, but it just was not for me. Also, I love video games, too. Mass Effect is a great series! I love the Count of Monte Cristo and, although I have not read it yet, I've seen the Les Miserables musical and absolutely adore it. I do own the book, though, I just haven't read it yet. Maybe your introduction will be the push I need to start it! Good luck with your semester and with Japan!
ReplyDeleteHello Ethan! I really interested in you major because I never heard about Chemical Engineering before. One interesting thing was when I complained about the current battery life to my Electrical Engineering friend, he explained to me that developing barratry is not his job but chemical Engineers' job.
ReplyDeleteI wish the next generation of battery comes soon because battery is vulnerable in modern technology; it grows more slowly than other technologies.
Hello Ethan! It definitely sounds like you keep yourself busy and that you have a lot going on in your life. It's really interesting that you want to move out of the country, especially to a place so far away, like Japan. I'm not a huge gamer, but I absolutely love the Mass Effect series. For me, the second game is the best. I just love the rag-tag-team feeling to it.
